New Eurostat data on seasonality in the tourist accomodation sector
Eurostat reported new data on the seasonality of arrivals and nights spent in accomodation establishments accross EU Member States, candidate States and EFTA countries.
In 2024, July (15%, 449 million nights) and August (16%, 493 million nights) accounted for 31% (942 million nights) of all annual nights spent in tourist accomodation. This strong seasonal concentration is driven by both environmental factors (such as climate and location) and social patterns (notably school holidays).
The seasonal peek was most pronounced in Croatia (56% of nights spent in 2024 were recorded in July and August), Bulgaria (44%) and Greece (41%). In contrast, the seasonal pattern was least pronounced in Germany and Finland (both 24%) and in Malta (23%).
Campsites played a major role in this seasonal concentration, accounting for two-thirds of Q3 overnight stays (July, August and September). In Denmark, France and Luxembourg, campsites recorded more overnight stays in July and August than in any other type of accomodation. In France 20% (92 million out of 451 million) of the annual number of tourism nights spent were at campsites.
