Commission fines Delivery Hero and Glovo €329 million for participation in online food delivery cartel
On 2 June, the European Commission announced that it has fined Delievry Hero and Glovo a total of €329 million for participating in a cartel in the online food delivery sector.
For background, in July 2018 Delivery Hero started acquiring stakes in Glovo, progerssively taking full control of the company in July 2022. After receiving information from national competition authorities and anonymous whistleblowers, the Commission carried out unannounced inspections at the companies’ offices in July 2022 and November 2023. It officially opened the investigation in July 2024.
The Commission has found that, from July 2018 until July 2022, Delievery Hero and Glovo progressively removed competitive constraints and enabled anti-competitive contacts between the two companies. In particular, the two companies agreed:
- Not to poach each other's employees
- To exchange commercially senstitive information
- To allocate geographic markets
Both companies aknowledged their involvement and agreed to settle the case with the Commission.
